Water Damaged Floor Joists
Most often floor joists need to be sistered because of two problems either water damage which leads to rot or termite damage that crumbled the joist.
Water damaged floor joists. Cut as closely as possible to floor joists. Do you see water damage. Cut several 2x6 boards to nail on under the newly exposed floor area.
These problems must be addressed firsthand prior to implementing any restoration steps. Typically floor joists are repaired or replaced working from below in a basement or crawl space. Unscrew the sub floor in the area you ll be cutting the damaged sub floor will still be screwed into the floor joists so you ll need to find and remove all those screws before you cut.
Do you see any splits in the wood. My approach was to install a new joist next to it resting one end 3 inches onto the mid span beam and installing a joist hanger on the other side. Before you replace damaged.
A water damaged floor requires immediate treatment dry rot in floor joints can weaken the structure. Sistering the joists means to fasten the joists together through the face to double the thickness of the framing. This is because significant damage to your joists can occur which can cause structural damage to your property.
Pull up water damaged subflooring with a pry bar. If you do take a hammer and gently tap the problem area or use a pick to see if the wood is sound. Use a circular saw set to 1 depth to cut the subflooring back beyond the damaged areas until you reach solid structural framing.
Either the leak is in direct contact with the floor or the leak has spread from the wall. The damaged joist measured exactly 2 inches by 6 1 4 inches deep a true 2 6. Repairing damp floor joists is no easy task.
